Due to their nature, the distinction between science and technology in chemistry and biology cannot be clearly defined. History has demonstrated that small scientific discoveries in these fields can lead to profound technological advances.

All research in this department is rich in science and discoveries--it is theoretical and applied, creative and original.

The focus of chemistry and biology is not simply chemistry and biology in the narrow sense of these terms. The transformation and transfer of substances, energy and information in living things can also serve as industrial elements, and incorporate the seeds of future technology.

Chemistry and biology are natural phenomena, manifested, for example, in the cherry blossoms of spring and the colors of autumn leaves. At the same time, these sciences are also indispensable for dealing with impending food and energy crises and the negative consequences of human civilization.

With this in mind, we seek and welcome young scientists with vision and dreams.

For entry to our Master's program (doctoral program stage 1), the department assesses academic capability by means of exams focused on the disciplines of the Advanced Chemistry Departments Group of the graduate school and various fields of chemistry.

In order to ensure that we train advanced researchers, we assess applicants for admission to our doctoral program (stage 2) through written and oral exams related to the applicable field of specialization, to confirm that they have sufficient ability to execute research.

In our graduate school educational programs we provide advanced lectures relating to various fields of specialization, as well as advanced studies in synthetic chemistry and biological chemistry which illuminate the interrelationship between these two fields. Our aim is to train technical specialists who are equipped with both advanced specialist knowledge in a broad span of fields--from the theory and basic principles of chemical reactions to microbiological research--and a scientific foundation strong enough to allow them to step unhesitatingly into interdisciplinary research environments.

In addition, reflecting the importance of organic chemistry, in the first year of the Master's program a group of academic staff runs an advanced organic chemistry course composed of twice-weekly lectures and seminars. This initiative is designed to help students develop specialist expertise in a short period of time, as well as a professional attitude, based on the realization that they will be engaging in pioneering research.

English-language education is enhanced by the department's foreign academic staff.
