The scope of chemistry, which explores the structure, properties, and transformation of materials at a molecular level, is today expanding rapidly into the fields of materials and life sciences. This is evidence that materials science and technology, life sciences, and chemical engineering have truly penetrated to the molecular level, but we can also conclude that chemistry is beginning to concern itself with functional networks of molecules that generate "materials" and "life," and even with communication itself. This expansion in scope is demonstrated by the fact that many of the Nobel Prizes in Chemistry over recent years have been awarded for biology-related research. Since all materials are based on molecules, it is not an exaggeration to say that many and various problems--including, for example, mental illness--fall into the domain of chemistry. One of the missions of chemistry embraced by this department is to explore new fields of chemistry from the perspective of intellectual culture, human well-being, and quality of life. We look forward to working with students who have a strong foundation in the principles of chemistry, the vision and desire to work in unexplored territory, and a pioneering spirit.
